Candles originated in the 3rd century B.C. approximately. All western temples kept bees for making beeswax. Chinese candles also have a long history. The production time of beeswax in China is approximately the same as that in western countries. According to A Miscellany of the Western Capital, in the early years of the Western Han Dynasty, the King of Nanyue presented 5 hu of granulated sugar and 200 pieces of honey candles to Emperor Gaozu of Han, Liu Bang. Emperor Gaozu of Han was overjoyed. According to research, the honey candle is the prototype of modern candle. It was used for paying tribute at that time. In the Song Dynasty, candle appeared in border trades with the Western Xia as a commodity for exchange, revealing that it was very commonly used but precious at that time. At the height of Qing Dynasty and Ming Dynasty, external exchange further increased, and candles were available for ordinary people. The traditional handmade painted candles have a history of over one hundred years! Early handicraftsmen used wax to create vivid images that were decorated with brightly colored hand painting to make candles lifelike.
